Recognizing, Celebrating, and Appreciating:
How to Re-energize, Reinforce, and Inspire Ever Higher Performance

A Customized and Practical How-to Half-Day Workshop for Front Line Staff and/or Management

There are only two types of people who thrive on being recognized for their achievements: men and women. Reflecting on a life of pioneering work, 19th century American philosopher and psychologist William James said, "I now perceive one immense omission in my psychology — the deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated."

There are many factors that mobilize and energize people. A key factor is appreciation, recognition, and celebration. These successful feelings are addictive. We all want to feel like winners making progress that's being noticed. Study after study continuously puts recognition, appreciation, and celebration near the top of lists of motivational factors.

High-performance cultures are brimming with recognition, celebration, and appreciation because top brains and hearts go where they are clearly valued. Effective leaders use a multitude of ways to build an atmosphere of accomplishment and pride through recognition and appreciation. But the best leaders aren’t the central figures in control of doling out the goodies. Strong leaders model and encourage recognition and appreciation up, down and across the organization and within and among teams.

Many organizations are not very rewarding and people feel unappreciated, unrecognized, and taken for granted. When recognition efforts are attempted they are too often recognition lotteries (someone happened to get praised), manipulative, or seen as “suck up to the boss” programs. In other cases, attempts at recognition are devalued by phoney flattery, meaningless trinkets, and paternalistic pats on the head.

Jim Wrote the Books on Recognition, Celebration, and Appreciation

Jim and his associates have spent over 25 years helping thousands of managers in hundreds of organizations build high-performance organizations. As cofounder of The Achieve Group, Jim Clemmer worked with California-based Zenger Miller (both are now part of AchieveGlobal) and Tom Peters to help executive teams implement a cultural change process called Toward Excellence. One of its key modules was on recognition to help foster commitment.

All five of Jim’s international best-selling books feature extensive chapters or sections on recognition, celebration, and appreciation.
